Spot Customer Service Superstars

Survey techniques to identify customer service superstars during hiring. Find employees who excel at client relations.

Introduction

Prioritizing customer service in your recruitment efforts is going to make a big difference in your company’s ability to succeed. While customer service may not seem at the same level as some other types of knowledge or talents, there is no denying the reality that customer service is both an important skill for attracting and retaining customers, as well as a talent that some people have, and some people don’t. But if you’re going to hire based on customer service potential, you’re going to need to find a way to identify it. You can do that through your interview questions, and with the right questions you should be able to identify who is going to have the right attitude and thought process to make sure the customer is satisfied.

Questions to Ask to Identify Customer Service Superstars

What would you do if you had an unruly customer? You’ll want to ask questions that give the employee an opportunity to talk about their thought process. You can also be more specific, and give an example that really occurred in your business and see if the applicant comes up with a solution that makes great customer service sense.

Tell me about one of the worst customers you have ever dealt with. Everyone complains, so the answer to this question doesn’t necessarily mean that an employee isn’t a customer service expert.

But the less an employee complains about a customer, the more likely they are going to be great at empathizing with the customer and help address their needs. What does “the customer is always right” mean to you? Customers are not always “right,” in the sense that what they think is always accurate.

But they are always right in the sense that, if they experience a problem, chances are there is or was something that could be done to prevent it or mitigate it. See if the applicant’s answer falls in line with what you’re thinking, and that they back it up with examples.

Asking the Right Questions

These are just some examples of the types of questions that companies should be asking in order to find out which employees are going to be the best at delivering excellent customer service. Make sure you genuinely think about what you’re asking your applicants, and how well you are prioritizing the applicants that understand customer service.
