Twitter for Employee Engagement

Twitter for employee engagement and internal communication research.

Introduction

Recently we had an article about using Twitter to improve customer satisfaction . But customer satisfaction isn’t the only part of running a good company. You also need to ensure that your company has good employee satisfaction. That brings up an interesting question: Can you improve employee satisfaction with a company Twitter account as well?

Limitations of Employee Satisfaction Via Twitter

There are a few issues that make employee satisfaction less likely, at least when compared to customer satisfaction benefits. First of all, addressing employee concerns can be dangerous – as can searching for your company name. You may find employees that are venting frustrations about your workplace, and you’re unlikely to get any serious complaints from employees about your business practices.

You also don’t want to have employees respond to your work account via Twitter. You may accidentally read their profiles and find out personal information, something that could cause legal trouble in the future.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not without benefits. Here’s how you can improve employee satisfaction with a company Twitter account:

How to Use Twitter to Improve Employee Satisfaction

Announcements: It’s hard enough to keep track of emails. Twitter keeps announcements fresh, and is a less intrusive way to remind people of meetings or company outings, or major dates, etc. FAQ: When you, a manager, or an executive notices that a question is coming up often, you can use Twitter to provide the answer publically.

This will save time, give you something to point to if others ask the question, and allow you to communicate with all of your employees. Information: When you need to provide information, a handout or email is useful.

But by also providing that information via Twitter, you make it possible for employees to view it from anywhere if they need the reminder. Twitter accounts can also be used to provide information on new sales or specials for employees. You can even use it to tell jokes and otherwise improve the mood of those working within the company.

It’s not the greatest tool, because you don’t want employees following you unless they do it from a work-only account. But you can have them bookmark your Twitter page or create work-only accounts and suddenly Twitter becomes more than a piece of social media. It becomes a news-board that is informative to all employees and can go a long way to improve employee morale and satisfaction.

All through a simple platform that won’t take much time to use.
