Adding Video & Audio
You can embed a video or audio clip directly on a survey page to give respondents context, instructions, or something to react to. Both are added the same way you add any other question type.
Adding a Video or Audio Element
- In the Survey Editor, click Add Question (or the + button).
- Choose Video or Audio from the question type list.
- In the settings panel, set your Source Type and provide the media.
- Adjust the size if needed, then save.
Source Type: URL or Embed Code
Each media element supports two source types, selected with the Source Type toggle:
| Source Type | When to use it |
|---|---|
| URL | Paste a link to the media and SurveyMethods handles the player |
| Embed Code | Paste a provider’s <iframe> / embed snippet to render it as-is |
Supported URLs:
- Video — YouTube, Vimeo, or a direct video file URL (for example an
.mp4link). - Audio — SoundCloud or a direct audio file URL.
For YouTube and Vimeo links, you can paste the normal watch or share URL. SurveyMethods automatically converts it to the correct embed player.
If your provider isn’t listed, switch to Embed Code and paste the embed snippet they give you.
Setting the Size
You can control how the media appears on the page:
- Video — set both a Width and Height in pixels (defaults are 560 x 315).
- Audio — set a Width in pixels (default 400).
The player also scales down automatically to fit narrower screens, so it stays responsive on mobile devices.
Tips
- Place the media element near the top of a page so respondents watch or listen before answering related questions.
- Keep clips short and relevant to reduce drop-off.
- Always Preview your survey to confirm the media loads and plays as expected before distributing it.
Once your media is in place, you’re ready to add follow-up questions such as Multiple Choice or a Comments Box to capture reactions.
