Creating a Quiz

SurveyMethods lets you turn a survey into a quiz by scoring individual questions. When you enable scoring, each answer choice is worth a number of points, and every response is scored automatically as it comes in.

Enabling Quiz Mode on a Question

Scoring is set per question, so you can mix scored and unscored questions in the same survey. It is available on three question types:

To enable it:

1. In the survey editor, add or edit one of the question types above.
2. Open the question’s Options tab.
3. Check Score this question (enable quiz mode).

Assigning Points to Answers

Once scoring is enabled, a Points field appears next to each answer choice.

1. Enter a point value for each choice (0 to 10,000).
2. Give the correct answer the highest value, and leave incorrect answers at 0 (or use partial points where it makes sense).
3. Save the question.

Points are stored with the question, so you can adjust them later without recreating your answers.

How Responses Are Scored

When a respondent submits an answer, SurveyMethods records the point value of the choice they selected. Each scored answer keeps its points alongside the response, so you can review performance once results start arriving. See Analyzing Survey Results for how to explore your response data.

Good to Know

• Scoring applies only to Multiple Choice, Checkboxes, and Dropdown questions. Text, rating, and other question types are not scored.
• Enabling scoring changes how a question’s answers are stored, so it is best to decide on scoring before collecting responses.
• Respondents are not shown a live score or pass/fail feedback screen at the end of the survey today; scoring is captured for your own review and analysis.
