Canceling Your Subscription

If you need to cancel your SurveyMethods subscription, this guide explains the process and what happens to your account and data.

Before You Cancel

Consider Your Options

Before canceling, you might want to:

  • Downgrade instead: Switch to a lower-cost plan or the free Basic plan
  • Pause collecting: Close your surveys temporarily without canceling
  • Contact support: We may be able to help with any issues you’re experiencing

What You’ll Lose Access To

Depending on your plan, canceling means losing:

How to Cancel

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Log in to your SurveyMethods account
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Go to the Billing tab
  5. Click Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Auto-Renewal for annual plans)
  6. Select a reason for canceling (optional but helpful)
  7. Click Confirm Cancellation

You’ll receive a confirmation email once the cancellation is processed.


What Happens After Canceling

Immediate Effects

  • Auto-renewal is stopped: You won’t be charged again
  • Current access continues: You keep your plan until the billing period ends
  • No refunds: Unused time is not refunded

At End of Billing Period

When your paid period ends:

  1. Account downgrades to Basic (Free)

    • You keep access to SurveyMethods
    • Features are limited to Basic plan
  2. Surveys are handled as follows:

    • First 3 surveys remain active
    • Additional surveys are archived (not deleted)
    • Premium features on surveys are disabled
  3. Responses:

    • First 100 responses remain accessible
    • Excess responses enter a 60-day grace period
    • After 60 days, excess responses may be deleted

Canceling Different Plan Types

Monthly Plans

  • Cancel anytime
  • Access continues until your billing date
  • No prorated refunds

Annual Plans

  • Cancel auto-renewal anytime
  • Full access continues until annual term ends
  • No partial refunds for unused months

Team Plans

When canceling a Team plan:

  1. All team members lose access at period end
  2. The team is dissolved
  3. The account owner retains a Basic account
  4. Team surveys become owned by the account owner

Important: Notify your team members before canceling so they can export any data they need.

Enterprise Plans

If you have an Enterprise plan set up through our sales team:

  • Contact your account manager to cancel
  • Or reach out to sales@surveymethods.com
  • Cancellation terms are per your contract

Protecting Your Data

Before Canceling

We strongly recommend:

  1. Export all responses

    • Go to each survey > Results > Export
    • Download CSV and/or PDF formats
  2. Download reports

    • Save any custom reports you’ve created
    • Screenshot charts and visualizations
  3. Save survey designs

    • Export survey structures if you want to recreate them later
  4. Notify respondents

    • If surveys are embedded, update your website
    • Inform anyone with survey links

What’s Preserved

Even after canceling:

  • Survey structures are kept (within Basic limits)
  • Up to 100 responses remain accessible
  • Your account login still works
  • You can upgrade again anytime

Reactivating Your Subscription

Changed your mind? You can resubscribe anytime:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Go to Account Settings > Billing
  3. Click Upgrade or Resubscribe
  4. Choose your plan and complete payment

What Gets Restored

If you resubscribe before the 60-day grace period ends:

  • All your responses are restored
  • Archived surveys become active again
  • Premium features are re-enabled

If you resubscribe after the grace period:

  • Responses over the limit may have been deleted
  • Surveys are restored
  • New responses can be collected

Deleting Your Account

If you want to permanently delete your account (not just cancel):

  1. First, cancel your subscription (see steps above)
  2. Go to Account Settings > Profile
  3. Scroll to Delete Account
  4. Type “DELETE” to confirm
  5. Click Permanently Delete Account

Warning: Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. All data, surveys, and responses will be permanently removed.


Refund Policy

Standard Policy

  • Monthly plans: No refunds for unused portions
  • Annual plans: No refunds for unused months
  • Accidental charges: Contact support within 48 hours

Exceptions

We may provide refunds in cases of:

  • Technical issues preventing service use
  • Duplicate charges
  • Billing errors on our part

Common Questions

Can I cancel and keep my data?

Yes. Canceling downgrades you to Basic—it doesn’t delete your account. Your data is preserved (within Basic limits) indefinitely.

Will I still be able to log in?

Yes. Canceling the paid subscription doesn’t delete your account. You can log in anytime and access your Basic account.

Can I cancel during a free trial?

Yes. If you cancel during your trial, you won’t be charged. Your account will revert to Basic when the trial ends.

What if I have unpaid invoices?

You must resolve any outstanding payments before you can cancel. Contact support if you need assistance.

How do I cancel if I paid through iOS/Android?

If you subscribed through a mobile app store, you need to cancel through that platform:

  • iOS: Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions
  • Android: Google Play Store > Subscriptions
