Optimizing for Mobile
A large share of survey responses come from phones and tablets. SurveyMethods surveys are responsive out of the box, and a few design choices help them look and feel great on smaller screens.
Surveys Are Responsive by Default
You don’t need to build a separate mobile version or flip any switch. Every survey automatically adapts its layout to the respondent’s screen size, resizing text, buttons, and answer options to fit. Some question types adjust their layout too. For example, Matrix / Rating Scale questions switch from a wide grid on desktop to a stacked, one-row-at-a-time layout on phones so respondents never have to scroll sideways.
Previewing on Mobile and Tablet
Before you send your survey, check how it looks on each device:
- Open your survey and click Preview.
- Use the device switcher to toggle between Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile views.
- Step through every page and answer a few questions to confirm everything is readable and tappable.
Theme Choices That Affect Mobile
Your theme carries over to mobile, so a few settings matter more on small screens. Adjust these under the Theme tab (see Customizing Survey Themes).

| Text contrast | Ensure strong contrast so text stays legible outdoors |
Best Practices for Mobile Respondents
- Keep surveys short. Long surveys feel much longer on a phone.
- Break content into multiple pages rather than one long scroll.
- Prefer simpler question types over very wide matrices with many columns.
- Keep answer option labels concise so they don’t wrap awkwardly.
- Always test with the Preview device switcher before distributing.
